Basil Borutski, identified as suspect in Wilno shootings

After finding Anastasia Kuzyk shot dead in a Wilno residence just before 9 a.m. police launched a manhunt throughout the Ottawa Valley in search of a suspect identified at the time only as armed and dangerous. Tragically, before the day was over two other women were dead.
Information discovered during the investigation of Kuzyk’s death, led police to a residence on Foymount Road where they found the body 48-year-old Nathalie Warmerdam. At approximately 11:10 a.m., police then discovered the third victim, 66-year-old Carol Culleton at a location on Kamaniskeg Lake Road just south of Barry’s Bay.
For more than five hours for while officers searched for the suspect children at schools and residents in the Wilno area were placed under lockdown; advised to remain indoors and notify authorities of any suspicious activity. Around 2:30 p.m. Ottawa police apprehended suspect Basil Borutski, age 57 west of the capital on Kinburn Side Road. Borutski is to appear in court in Pembroke today.
The Killaloe and Renfrew OPP Crime Units, under the direction of A/D/Inspector Mark Zulinski, Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman and Detective Inspector Dave Robinson, Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit (FISU) are continuing the investigation.
