Banner project honours local heroes

This year, the Bancroft Business Improvement Area and the Bancroft North Hastings Heritage Museum, have launched a banner program, providing an opportunity for families and friends to honour a veteran. The banners include the phrase “Lest We Forget” and include a photograph of the honouree alongside stylized poppies.

As we move into the next month of the year we come across another hair growing month — the one, the only, the one that started it all — Movember. It’s the international month of moustaches to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers. Since its inception, hair growing for causes has become a normal thing to do and since it have come Julyna, for cervical cancers awareness and Decembeard — we’re not really sure what that one is about, mostly showing off and scratchy Christmas kisses

Remembering a Man Who Walks Among the Stars

When I first heard the news that Gord Downie had succumbed to his illness it felt as if I had lost a close friend. Having never held a conversation or even shaken hands with him, I could not comprehend why such a feeling of profound sadness had washed over me. It wasn’t until after I took a deep dive into Downie and The Tragically Hip’s music catalogue over the next couple of days that it occurred to me why the news of his passing seemed to hit so hard.

I remember getting off the bus after school when I was young in Bethany. I’d head across the street to the library, which also happened to be the municipal office. There, I would get free access to surf the web. Then it was dial-up, today, when you see students congregating outside of the Bancroft Public Library, you know they’re there for the same, except now it’s Wi-Fi.

Youth plotting to bring change to their communities

Recognizing a limited pool of opportunities for the next generation of Hastings County to get involved in shaping their communities, a small team of community-minded youth recently decided to take charge of their future by organizing the area’s first ever Youth Summit.

October is Child Abuse Prevention Month

As we make our way through October, we recognize the 25th annual Child Abuse Prevention Month. We recognize that in a perfect world, every child would have a safe, loving home and family, who could also afford to put food on the table every night.

Bancroft BIA’s upcoming annual general meeting

On Oct. 31 at 8 a.m., Bancroft’s BIA will be holding their annual general meeting of the membership, at Club 580, to review the past year and to approve the proposed 2018 budget. The meeting is open to anyone interested.

Sometimes passing isn’t worth it

Before I could fully understand what was happening, there was a series of honks and flashes of red brake lights. As I came to a full stop, and luckily the three cars behind me also did, the three cars ahead of me swerved onto the shoulder. All I saw was the front right corner of a white northbound SUV bumper disappear back into his lane of traffic where the van had been seconds before.
