Wollaston Township has experienced a year filled with challenges, compassion and community. Residents and our council are working hard to resolve the challenges. But it will take time, communication and good faith.
2016 was a good year for Hastings Highlands. We held several very well attended and interesting workshops and events. Following up on our business retention and expansion grant and the work done on it in the past year, many people came together to do the final reports, assist in compiling all information into action plans for this and many years to come. Thanks to the efforts of the Maynooth and Hastings Highlands Business Association and the many volunteers who helped compile surveys, visit the businesses of our area, they compiled a list of 185 known businesses, picked one in three to survey and had a resounding 87 per cent response rate.

Now that the turkey has been picked clean, the wrapping paper recycled, and holiday music has finally departed the airwaves, it might be time to reflect on the message which the writer who virtually invented modern Christmas celebrations was trying to get across. I refer of course to Charles Dickens, the author of A Christmas Carol, a book which was first published over a century and a half ago.

By buying goods and services locally, you contribute to a tradition that was established in the mid-1800s and there’s a profound benefit in keeping your money in town. Our communities depend on it.
