Hastings Highlands keeping an eye on municipal equipment

By Sarah Sobanski

Hastings Highlands council is installing GPSs into its operations equipment.

Council is spending just under $25,000 to put GPS monitoring into over 55 municipal assets including trucks, graders, and plows. The monthly upkeep for the systems are estimated at $1,041 a month. Trackmatics Inc. quoted the costs, which were presented to council Aug. 24.

Hastings Highlands operations manager Adrian Tomasini suggested that the GPSs would keep the municipality in the know in case of an accident or theft. He also said that it would allow the municipality to track its equipment in case of liable action.

The Trackmatics Inc. will record and store information from monitored equipment for up to seven years. It also offered monitoring of salt and sanding application.

The municipality has budgeted for the installation and continued costs.
