Heat kills

July 29, 2016

To the Editor:

Heat kills.

The Mineral Capital Concert was cancelled last week due to the extreme heat. The next morning, I went into the Credit Union, moving slowly and with deliberation. It was still hot outside, but the CU was just right. At home, I put a wet washcloth on top of my head and that really did help. I took a cool shower – and wanted another in half an hour! Not an option everyone has.

Where in the North Hastings area can people go when it is too hot to breathe? And is there a way for some of the less mobile folks to get to a cooler/safer venue?

We do not often have intense heat, dangerous heat, but the world is getting warmer – even in North Hastings! It may be a good idea to let people know where they can go to be comfortable.

The library in Maynooth? Some part of the health care facility in Bancroft?  Where can people go and is there some way to provide transportation to give them a break?  Is there any group, or individuals, who can help when the heat becomes a crisis?

Heat really does kill. We need to let people know where and how help can be available for the next day of extreme heat. We need to care for our neighbours.

Dorothy Parshall,

Bancroft
