Knights of Columbus prepare for Soap Box Derby RaceBy Sara Gottardi On the morning of Wednesday, June 17 the Knights of Columbus gathered together setting the grounds in a celebration for introducing their newly built and painted go-karts for the upcoming Wheels, Water and Wings (WWW) event happening at the forefront of July. Being held on Flint Avenue off the main strip of downtown Bancroft, everybody was extremely excited and proud over their accomplishment and accordingly towards their involvement within the community in being a part of this event. The Knights of Columbus including, Frank Hicks, John Pires, Charlie Callaghan and Grand Knight, Paul Hall shared how they'd worked together in building as well as painting the 30 new go-karts for the youth of Bancroft to ride at the WWW event vastly approaching for next month. Callaghan, a local woodworking man and Pires, of the Jams and Jellies store situated next to the Old Tin Shed were revered by the group to be main two who had worked in getting everything together. Equally so, the other members of the Knights of Columbus and local community coalesced together in helping to build the Knights organization and ideas in participating in this years WWW event as funders. As it is the first time the Knights have organized their own Soap Box Derby for the WWW event they'd expressed a sincere excitement in being a part of the event and being able to be included in helping the community. Looking forward to having an enjoyable and exciting time, they're also glad to say they're in good hopes and spirit about the event as they'd attained sponsors for the go-karts exceptionally quick and easily. Banners will be displayed at the front of the go-karts for each sponsor who has purchased a go-kart. Sponsors stickers are plastered on the front of the go-karts built by the Knights of Columbus to show their support as a collective together. Having sold out in just three days from the local businesses participating in the WWW event the Knights were extremely pleased and also said kids from ages 9 to 14 will be driving the go-karts for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places with winners of the race attaining a plaque and businesses getting a trophy to showcase their participation in the WWW and share in their offices. Wheels, Water, and Wings will be running from July 10 to July 12 and the Soap Box Derby will be taking place on the Saturday of July 11 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration is required and for more information contact John Pires at 613-332-6719 or email thestonekitchen@nexicom.net. |
