Liberals unseat Conservatives locally and nationallyBy Nate Smelle Conservatives throughout the riding and across the country woke up with a case of the blues on Tuesday morning after Canadians elected the Liberal Party and their leader Justin Trudeau to take over for the Harper government. Like many of his fellow Conservative candidates, local Member of Pariament for the riding of Hastings-Lennox-Addington (HLA), Daryl Kramp came up short on Oct. 19. In what turned out to be one of the closest races in the 2015 election he ended up losing to Liberal candidate Mike Bossio by only 373 votes. As the votes were counted from each of the polling stations in the HLA riding Bossio and Kramp took turns holding the lead. Late in the evening with 90 per cent of the polls in Kramp led the race by only four votes. However, when all of the counts were in, it was Bossio who came out on top. His campaign manager Bob Cottrell was elated by the outcome last night both locally and nationally. “We are all absolutely thrilled,” said Cottrell the next morning. “We were confident going in, but we were surprised at how well we did in the end. Everyone worked really hard, and Mike and Justin both ran amazing campaigns.” In total Bossio received 20,813 and Kramp 20,440. The NDPs Betty Bannon came in third with 6,217, followed by Cam Mathers of the Green Party of Canada with 1,449 votes. |
