Small number attend town hall meetingThe town council of Bancroft held its second town hall meeting of the year last Tuesday at Club 580. Unlike the previous lively meeting held last spring at a packed Dungannon Community Centre, this one was sparsely attended – only about 20 people showed up. There were only a couple of questions and no debates. Mayor Bernice Jenkins began the meeting with a moment of silence for the victims of the Paris attacks, noted the new streetlights, promised continuing support for the boardwalk, and thanked town volunteers. Deputy Mayor Paul Jenkins (no relation) outlined the town's financial condition, pointing to the projected surplus on the operating budget and recent drops in the town debt. Chief administrative officer Hazel Lambe then reviewed various aspects of town administration, including infrastructure, water and sewers, public works, and waste disposal, and went on to note initiatives in economic development, including the proposed Earth Sciences Centre, and community safety. After a few questions about the Snow Road water main, the audience was invited to check out information displays, make written suggestions, and offer their expertise for future town issues. After the meeting, Mayor Jenkins commented: “Our staff did an awesome job to provide information. It is disappointing when only a small number of residents attend, but for those who did, we are grateful for their participation. I believe that town hall meetings are important, and we plan to repeat them in 2016.” |
